How to Get the Shovel in Fields of Mistria
Buy the Worn Shovel at the General Store, then use it for ground work and archaeological spots.
Direct answer
Go to the General Store in Mistria and buy the Worn Shovel; the current reference lists the price as 500 Tesserae. Put it on the tool bar after purchase. The shovel is separate from the Hoe: it handles its own ground and digging interactions, including archaeological spots.

Buy the first shovel at the General Store
Open the tool section at Mistria's General Store and look for the Worn Shovel. The current reference lists 500 Tesserae, and the store route does not require a dedicated shovel quest. If you are short on money, sell a controlled amount of crops, forage, or fish and keep enough for seeds and recovery items.
After buying it, place the shovel on the tool bar and select it. The Hoe and Shovel are different tools: the Hoe handles tilling, while the Shovel handles its own digging and ground interactions.
Use the shovel for ground work and archaeology
Use the shovel where the game presents a shovel interaction, then switch to the Hoe, seeds, and Watering Can for the planting sequence. Do not expect the shovel to perform every farming step.
Equip it at an archaeological spot to dig for artifacts or collection items. Keep the first unfamiliar artifact until you check Museum and request needs; selling every new find can create a longer seasonal backtrack.
If the shovel is missing, check the shop state first
Make sure you are in the General Store's tool tab, the store is open, and you have enough Tesserae. If you already bought it, check the backpack, tool bar, and storage before assuming the item disappeared.
If the shop still differs from the current reference, restart the menu and test without a mod that changes shop inventory. For a clean-client issue, record the version, date, and store screen before reporting it.
When to upgrade the Shovel
Worn Shovel is enough for early clearing and archaeology. Check the Blacksmith list when your current materials and Blacksmithing progress support an upgrade, but keep ore for weapons, buildings, and quests first.
Recipes, prices, and requirements are version-sensitive. Use the in-game list as the final check instead of copying a fixed number from an Early Access guide.
Use the Shovel without spending the whole day
Clear only the tiles you need for the next field or route, then keep stamina for watering, gathering, conversation, and requests. Rain is a good time for concentrated ground work.
Leave inventory space near an archaeology point and separate a first artifact from sale items. A small planned patch is safer than clearing the entire farm before the first week is stable.
