Unlock the museum
The Narrows museum is not the first place to visit for a new collection item. Complete Museum Donations Wanted, then return to the museum and use the donation categories to see which items still belong in each wing.
If the building or donation interaction is not available, check the quest state and the current story progress before assuming the item is missing. A guide written before the museum unlock can describe an older progression step.
Use the four wings as a checklist
The current museum structure separates Archaeology, Fish, Flora, and Insects. This is more useful than a single total because it tells you which activity can produce the next missing item.
Keep a new item until you have checked its museum use. The fact that an item can be sold or cooked does not mean it is safe to spend when the collection is unfinished.

When your in-game total differs, compare the wing, the item name, and the version before reporting an error. Keep the exact English name visible when searching a guide or community list.
A safe collection routine
For each new fish, plant, insect, or artifact, check the museum marker before selling, cooking, gifting, or using it in a request. Store one copy when the item is difficult to replace.
After donating, use the remaining copies for recipes, quests, or money according to your current goal. The museum is a long-term checklist, so progress is usually safer when you avoid spending the only copy.
